Issue: Education
Did the founding fathers guarantee free education? I don’t think so. Nonetheless, if we are going to have publicly funded schools, there should be some sort of competition. Part of the reason we don’t have much competition is because teachers are allowed to unionize, which ultimately hurts the children. No taxpayer-funded endeavor should be allowed to unionize, ever. Competition can easily solve most of our education and societal problems.
I am a strong proponent of school vouchers. Moreover, schools should be a local issue. Why is the federal government involved in this? They don’t know our needs. This is lunacy. We have to send our money to DC bureaucrats, funnel it back through the State, County and THEN back to your local community. A dollar paid out in taxes is about a quarter by the time it makes it back home. The progressive solution to education is to throw money at it (and it is never enough) and increase teacher pay. Yeah, that works magnificently in Washington DC. For what we are paying to educate our youth in the District of Columbia, you could cover a college student’s tuition, room and board at a major University. While I am a supporter of merit pay and rewarding our good teachers, I can’t help but think that if someone went into the profession with the impression that they were going to be rich as a teacher…............then they are probably too dumb to teach.
